Manchester United avenged their Manchester derby defeat to City in the Premier League, knocking the reigning holders out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Juan Mata’s early second-half goal ensured that José Mourinho’s men shook off their heavy defeat to Chelsea at the weekend and the Reds will now go on to face West Ham in the quarter-finals of the competition.
It was a solid and efficient performance from United – who fielded a very strong side in contrast to City, with Pep Guardiola deciding to field a distinctly second-string side with a couple of promising youngsters in the form of Pablo Maffeo and Aleix Garcia in the mix.
By the time the match came to an end, Old Trafford was rocking to chants of “Mourinho’s red and white army” and 46 days after suffering a demoralising derby defeat, revenge had been exacted on the noisy neighbours.
