Mourinho hit with second misconduct charge

Manchester United manager José Mourinho has been hit with another misconduct charge by the Football Association after being sent to the stands during United’s goalless draw with Burnley on Saturday.

This is the second misconduct charge that has been levied on the Portuguese manager in a week, after he was charged with comments made towards referee Anthony Taylor before the clash against Liverpool in mid-October.

Mourinho was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg at Old Trafford at the start of the second half, after he protested vehemently at a decision not to give United a penalty. Matteo Darmian had been clipped by Jon Flanagan near the edge of the area, although it was marginal as to whether it should have been a penalty.

The 53-year-old emerged for the second half but was escorted to a seat in the stands before being moved to the directors’ box just a few minutes later. He declined to speak to the press after the match, with assistant Rui Faria handling media duties.

The FA statement reads:

Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct following Manchester United’s game against Burnley on Saturday [29 October 2016].

It is alleged that in or around the tunnel area at half-time he used abusive and/or insulting words towards a Match Official.

He has until 6pm on 4 November 2016 to respond to the charge.

Possible punishments for the misconduct include a warning, fine, touchline ban or stadium ban.
