Manchester United’s chances of qualifying from the Europa League group stages took a huge dent on Thursday night, as they fell to defeat to Fenerbahce in Istanbul.
The Sukru Saracoglu provided an intimidating atmosphere as the Reds aimed to follow on from the victory against the Yellow Canaries at Old Trafford three weeks ago, but they were shellshocked with just over a minute gone on a clock, as Moussa Sow’s spectacular bicycle kick looped over David de Gea and into the back of the net.
United’s night gradually got worse from that moment onwards, as they failed to find any sort of cohesive attacking rhythm and saw Paul Pogba limp off with injury in the late stages of the first half.
The second half provided no respite for the Reds and José Mourinho’s side went on to a concede a second, as Jeremain Lens’ free-kick left De Gea rooted to the spot. Despite Wayne Rooney notching his first goal since August with a thunderbolt from 25 yards with two minutes remaining, United were unable to salvage a point from what was a disappointing performance.
