Quickfire Takeaways: Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United

Quickfire Takeaways: Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United

There were shades of the old Manchester United showing through last night at Selhurst Park, as José Mourinho’s Reds scored a late winner to beat Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace.

Paul Pogba had opened the scoring for United with the last kick of the first half, although the goal was certainly contentious, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic having handled in the build-up and Pogba standing offside.

However, United were made to pay for sitting off once again at the start of the second half, with James McArthur finishing a flowing Palace attack. It seemed that the Reds would once again drop points, until Ibrahimovic came up with the winner with a minute left, sidefooting home after being played through by Pogba.

Here are some quickfire takeaways:

Craig Pawson and his assistants – Unfortunately, the United win was soured by a demonstration of poor Premier League refereeing from Craig Pawson and his team, who conspired to make some atrocious decisions for both sides. The list includes:

  • Marcos Rojo getting away with a two-footed tackle on Wilfried Zaha (although the Argentine barely made contact)
  • Ibrahimovic handballing into the path of Pogba (who was offside) for United’s first
  • Joe Ledley practically elbowing the ball away from Rojo’s head in the penalty box from a corner
  • Juan Mata’s disallowed goal from a set-piece (Mata was miles onside as Rojo flicked the ball on into his path)

These decisions vastly affected the outcome of the game and questions have to be asked of the refereeing standards of the league. It’s not the first time that United have received a poor referee in their games this season and the Reds are lucky that they closed out the game, otherwise, they would have had every right to be aggrieved at Pawson’s officiating.

Paul Pogba – The Frenchman has started to prove his value in the last few weeks after a slow start and the stats are now reflecting his performances. He was man of the match on Wednesday night, tapping home the first before turning provider in the closing moments, delivering a wonderful through ball into the path of Ibrahimovic for the winner. His passing was wayward at times, but some of the balls he played through or over the top for his attackers were delightful. With this latest performance, Pogba’s second coming at United is picking up momentum. His chance creation is starting to produce results, and his numbers are starting to reflect his importance and contribution to the Reds.

Michael Carrick – Once again, the veteran showed that he was key to the cause, completing more passes than any other player on the pitch and keeping play ticking over. It is increasingly obvious that United are very much reliant on the 35-year-old in that defensive midfield position and his long-term replacement will have to be the priority in the market next summer. His rotation in and out of the team will be necessary this season, but his growing understanding in a three man midfield with Ander Herrera and Pogba has been an important part of United’s improved play in recent weeks.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Critics were baying for blood when Ibrahimovic made the move to Manchester this summer, with some claiming that the ageing Swede would have a hard time scoring in the Premier League compared to the inferior Ligue 1, but he’s certainly shut them up after a lean spell earlier in the season. Zlatan now has 8 goals in as many games and 14 in total after Wednesday. He’s started to convert his chances and with the likes of Pogba, Mata, Herrera and Henrikh Mkhitaryan supplying the chances behind him, it’s unlikely that he’ll stop anytime soon.

Eric Bailly – The Ivorian surprisingly started at right-back on Wednesday night ahead of Matteo Darmian and did pretty well despite struggling for most of the first half with a knee injury he suffered in the first few minutes in a collision with Lee Chung-yung. José Mourinho said after the game that it wasn’t the same knee that the Ivorian injured earlier in the season, although the manager also said that he didn’t know how severe the injury was. United will be hoping that it isn’t too severe, but it may be a blessing in disguise if the injury is serious enough to rule him out of African Cup of Nations duty in January; as the 22-year-old is a sure bet to be picked by the Ivory Coast if fit enough.

Team spirit – The value of the win to the players was obvious at the final whistle and the sheer passion of winning such a pivotal game was clear to see on the television pictures. José Mourinho walked out onto the pitch and hugged every single one of his players and you can clearly see a team spirit slowly building. It seems as if the players are coming together despite the adversity of the season and there appears to be a good understanding, bond and sense of cohesion amongst the playing group. This could define United’s season going forward and they need to sustain that momentum at the weekend, when they travel to the Hawthorns to face in-form West Brom.
