Player Ratings: Manchester United 3-1 Sunderland

Manchester United continued their recent fine run of form with victory against Sunderland at Old Trafford, with goals from Daley Blind, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the returning Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealing a fine three points for the Reds.

Sunderland boss David Moyes returned to Old Trafford for the first time since being sacked as United manager back in April 2010 and his side put up a good fight in the first half, but their resistance was eventually broken by a finely-worked move from the Reds, ending in a low driven finish from Blind six minutes before the break.

United had several chances to close out the game, but had to wait until the 82nd minute to notch their second – Paul Pogba setting up Ibrahimovic before the Swede finished cooly. Then came the final goal four minutes later, a real stunner from Mkhitaryan as the Armenian scorpion kicked Ibrahimovic’s cross into the corner of the net, stunning the Old Trafford crowd.

Fabio Borini scored a spectacular consolation for the Black Cats in injury time with a volley that gave David de Gea no chance, but United boss José Mourinho will be happy with another fine performance from the Reds and there are signs that the swagger and verve associated with United sides of yesteryear are slowly returning.
