Manchester United made it nine wins on the bounce in all competitions, taking control of their EFL Cup semi-final tie with a comfortable win against Hull City.
The Reds did not have to get out of first gear against a severely depleted Tigers side, who could only name six substitutes on the bench due to the lack of players available to Marco Silva.
Still, it took José Mourinho’s side 56 minutes to break the deadlock at Old Trafford, with Juan Mata tapping home after Henrikh Mkhitaryan had nodded the ball towards the far post from Antonio Valencia’s cross.
Substitute Marouane Fellaini then sealed the result with three minutes remaining on the clock, meeting Matteo Darmian’s deep cross with a looping header over Eldin Jakupovic.
The result leaves United in a dominant position heading into the second leg at the KCOM Stadium in two weeks’ time and gives the Reds momentum heading into a massive clash in the Premier League against Liverpool on Sunday.
