United to face Southampton in EFL Cup final

Manchester United will face Southampton in the EFL Cup final, despite losing the second leg of their semi-final tie against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

Goals from Tom Huddlestone and Oumar Niasse ended the Reds’ 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions, despite Paul Pogba equalising for United just after the hour mark.

However, United’s 2-0 win from the first leg at Old Trafford ensured that José Mourinho’s men had a big enough margin for a poor performance, and that proved to be the case tonight.

They will now go on to face Claude Puel’s Southampton at Wembley on February 27, with the Saints having knocked out Liverpool in the semi-finals through goals from Nathan Redmond and Shane Long over the two legs.

This latest appearance in the EFL Cup final makes it nine appearances in the total for the Reds and they will be looking to claim their fifth trophy in this competition, having last won it in 2010 after beating Aston Villa at Wembley.

On that occasion, goals from Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney sealed victory for United after James Milner had given Villa the lead with an early penalty.

As for Southampton, it will be their first appearance in the EFL Cup final and their first trip to the new Wembley since 2010, when they beat Carlisle United 4-1 in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.
