Manchester United sealed their progress into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a routine victory against Championship strugglers Wigan Athletic.
José Mourinho made nine changes to the side that faced Hull in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday, with the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Luke Shaw, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Anthony Martial all getting a run out.
It took United a while to break down a compact Wigan side managed by former Reds under-21 boss Warren Joyce, but the deadlock was broken just before half-time by Marouane Fellaini, as the Belgian headed home from a Schweinsteiger’s cross.
Chris Smalling made it two after the break with another header, this time from a Martial cross. From then onwards, it was a stroll for United, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan adding a third after an incisive counter attack from the Reds.
Forgotten man Schweinsteiger then rounded off the result and a fine individual performance with an improvised bicycle kick in the closing stages, ensuring that the holders’ name would be in the hat for the fifth round draw on Monday.
