One of Germany’s most outstanding footballers for the past decade, Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller has perpetually been linked with a move to the Premier League and it has been revealed that the German champions once rejected a bid from Manchester United for the striker.
The revelation was highlighted by Bayern’s financial officer Jan-Christian Dreesen who intimated that the Manchester outfit once offered £85 million for the 27-year-old but gave no indication as to when the offer was made.
Talking to German newspaper Sports Bild, Dressen revealed:
There really was such a thing. A fax came from England.
Muller who emerged through the youth academy at Bayern was not for sale, however, with Dressen continuing:
For us, selling Thomas Muller was never discussed.
If a player fits here, we would be stupid to go for the short-term prospect of a record profit only to weaken him.
Bayern Munich lead this year’s Bundesliga by seven points but turn their attentions tonight to the Champions League where they entertain old foe Arsenal in the first leg of their last-16 tie at the Allianz Arena.
Manchester United, sixth in the Premier League, host French side Saint-Etienne on Thursday in the knockout stages of the Europa League.
