Manchester United are through to the round of 16 in the Europa League after picking up a 1-0 win away at Saint-Etienne. United dominated the tie 4-0 on aggregate, a scoreline which should give the team confidence heading into the next round.
Jose’s side were not great but the early goal to end the tie allowed them to play the ball around slowly and try to keep players fit for the EFL Cup final on Sunday.
This wasn’t the case though, as bothHenrikh Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick were forced off the field with injuries. Mkhitaryan suffered a suspected hamstring injury just seven minutes after he scored the only goal of the game, a goal he got by getting on the end of a lovely cross by Juan Mata. Carrick looked to be struggling with his right calf and was substituted just after half-time.
Eric Bailly was shown a red card after picking up two yellows in three minutes and will miss the first leg of the round of 16.
The draw for the next round of Europa League is on Friday as United will be finding out who stands in their way of the quarter-finals.
