Marcus Rashford’s brilliantly struck free-kick handed Manchester United the advantage ahead of the second leg of their Europa League tie against Celta Vigo.
It could well have been more, but the heroics of Celta keeper Sergio Alvarez may well have kept the Spanish side in the tie, with efforts from Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard saved which may well have killed off the tie at Balaidos.
The atmosphere at the ground was electric, as Celta’s fans willed their side on to find a breakthrough and upset the odds in their first-ever European semi-final tie, but José Mourinho’s side produced a professional performance to see off Eduardo Berizzo’s men.
The winning goal was a superb one – having been fouled by Hugo Mallo just outside the Celta area, Rashford himself stepped up to flummox Alvarez and curl the ball just beyond the reach of the outstretched keeper.
United will be sweating on the fitness of Rashford and Ashley Young however, with the goalscorer going off with a knock shortly after scoring, while substitute Young came off minutes after arriving on the pitch with what looked to be a hamstring injury.
