Manchester United’s 25-game unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end last time out when they suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Arsenal and with it went the chance to hold their own destiny.
Jose Mourinho’s side now sit fifth in the table, four points adrift of the Champions League qualification places and reliant upon results of those around them going their way to sneak into the top-four.
While Mourinho will put on a brave face in front of the media, claiming that the Europa League is their only real chance of making it into the Champions League next season, there are no two ways about it: given the money he’s spent and the squad he has, United missing out on the top-four would be a huge disappointment.
Things don’t get easier for United with three games left of the season. A trip to Tottenham is up next, and you can find enhanced odds on an away win, while Spurs will be determined to win the final ever game at the current incarnation of White Hart Lane – and we saw what happened when United went to Upton Park for West Ham’s final game at their old stadium last season.
United are a tough to beat outfit, but with just nine points to play for and reliant upon results going their way, a top-four place remains a highly unlikely outcome in a season which has failed to live up to expectations.
