Manchester United continued their fine start to the Premier League season with a 4-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford, taking them level on points with crosstown rivals City at the top of the table.
The spotlight was firmly focused on Wayne Rooney before kick-off, with the former United captain making his return to the Theatre of Dreams after his summer move to Merseyside. Meanwhile, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young and Marcus Rashford started for the Reds after their fine performances in midweek against Basel in the Champions League.
It was a lightning start from United, with a wonderful strike from captain Antonio Valencia giving the Reds the early lead, fizzing a strike from just outside the area past Jordan Pickford after being set up by Nemanja Matić.
However, the Reds came under pressure for some periods of the encounter, as Everton came forward for an equaliser. The floodgates opened in the last ten minutes though, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan kicking it off, coolly slotting past Pickford after being set up by Romelu Lukaku.
Lukaku then turned goalscorer, stroking the ball past Pickford inside the area before substitute Anthony Martial rounded off the goalscoring, slotting home a penalty after former Red Morgan Schneiderlin handballed in the box.
