Champions League wins don’t get much easier than tonight for Manchester United, as the Reds beat CSKA Moscow 4-1 at the VEB Arena to make it two wins from two in Group A.
José Mourinho made a couple of changes from the side that beat Southampton at the weekend, switching to a three at the back formation as well and the first half performance from the Reds was excellent, tearing the Army Men to shreds in the final third.
A double from Romelu Lukaku set United on their way, while Anthony Martial’s coolly dispatched penalty saw the Reds into the break with a comfortable lead. Henrikh Mkhitaryan then added to that lead in the second half, and it was generally cruise control for Mourinho’s men in Moscow.
With Benfica getting hammered by Basel in the group’s other encounter in Switzerland, it means that United are in firm control of their Champions League group, and if results go their way in the next two encounters, it means that the Reds could well have their progress to the knockout stages sealed at the first possible opportunity.
