Manchester United’s last five trips to Portugal

Manchester United continue their Champions League campaign when they travel to Lisbon on Wednesday night to take on Portuguese champions Benfica.

It has been a contrasting start to the season for both of these iconic European sides. While United have had a flying start in the Premier League and won two from two in Europe, Benfica have had a torrid start to the defence of their Primeira Liga title and have lost both of their games in Europe, including a 5-0 defeat to Basel in their last group game.

That means United will head to the Portuguese capital confident of coming away with all three points against the struggling Eagles, with José Mourinho returning to the club where he was handed his first opportunity as manager.

United’s record in Portugal is a solid one. In twelve trips, the Reds have come away with six wins, two draws and four losses, with four of their last five trips resulting in a win. Our slideshow takes a more detailed look at those visits:
