A late rally from Manchester United could not prevent them from suffering their first Premier League defeat of the season against Huddersfield Town.
In truth, United did not deserve to get anything out from their trip to the John Smith’s Stadium, with defensive errors proving to be their undoing, as the Terriers scored two first-half goals to put the Reds on the backfoot.
David Wagner’s side went ahead midway through the first half, Aaron Mooy stripping the ball off Juan Mata in the middle of the pitch and driving forward. Tom Ince received the ball inside the box and fired off a shot which David de Gea was equal to, but the rebound fell to Mooy, who guided it into the corner.
Huddersfield doubled their lead six minutes later, as Victor Lindelöf, on for the injured Phil Jones, misjudged a long ball from goalkeeper Jonas Lössl, allowing striker Laurent Depoitre to round De Gea and tap the ball into an empty net.
United toiled in the second half, failing to create any decent chances until Romelu Lukaku took things into his own hands, driving forward and putting in an excellent cross that was met at the back post by substitute Marcus Rashford, giving the Reds a glimmer of hope with twelve minutes left.
But the Terries hung on in the end, giving United a first defeat of the season and José Mourinho will certainly have plenty to ponder.
