Manchester United continued their defence of the Carabao Cup, advancing to the quarter-finals with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Swansea City.
After the weekend defeat to Huddersfield Town, José Mourinho demanded much improvement from his side, and he made several changes, with youngsters Axel Tuanzebe and Scott McTominay among those given a chance. Victor Lindelöf also kept his place, despite a calamitous afternoon on Saturday.
But United shook off that defeat, playing with much better purpose and energy than at the weekend, and Jesse Lingard gave United the lead just past the 20 minute mark, slotting past Swansea keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt after some terrific build-up play with Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford.
And Lingard notched his second just before the hour mark, expertly heading past Nordfeldt from just inside the penalty area after meeting a brilliant cross from Matteo Darmian. United could easily have notched a third a couple of minutes later, with Tuanzebe firing over from close range after a corner was knocked down by McTominay.
Otherwise, it was a confidence-boosting night for United, who got through unscathed ahead of a crucial Premier League clash against high-flying Tottenham at lunchtime on Saturday.
