United handed injury boost ahead of Swansea clash

Manchester United have been handed a boost to their defence ahead of their Carabao Cup tie against Swansea City on Tuesday night.

Centre-back Phil Jones, who was forced off against Huddersfield Town at the weekend with an injury, has been given the all-clear and flown with the rest of the Red Devils squad to Wales ahead of the game.

It’s United’s second Carabao Cup game of the season as they look to defend the trophy they won by beating Southampton 3-2 in a dramatic game at Wembley last season, which featured an exquisite free-kick goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish striker is among those still out injured, alongside Marcos Rojo, Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini, but the four of them are all set to return to action soon, with Zlatan himself also expected to be back before the turn of the year.

Eric Bailly is another who will miss the game against Swansea, still carrying the knock he sustained whilst playing for the Ivory Coast during the last international break; although his return should come at the weekend against Tottenham Hotspur, or against Benfica in a week’s time.

Luke Shaw is another player expected to return to action against the Swans, with a start at left-back in the pipeline for the youngster, who needs to prove himself at the risk of being sold by United if his form doesn’t improve.

United kick off against Swansea at 19:45 on Tuesday night.
