Premier League side Manchester United have been handed a huge transfer blow as target Leon Goretzka has suffered a leg injury which could see him sidelined for some time, meaning a move in January is now highly unlikely, according to a report on the Daily Mail.
The injury means that Goretzka would not be able to pass a medical at the Manchester club if they were to agree on a deal to sign him with his current club Schalke.
The 22-year-old’s current contract at the German Bundesliga club expires in June 2018, meaning he could leave as a free agent in the summer.
Many of the top European clubs have been keeping a close eye on the progress of Goretzka, including Italian Serie A side Juventus and Premier League side Arsenal.
The midfielder burst onto the scene in the Confederations Cup for Germany and was one of the key players as they went on to win the tournament against Chile in the final.
Following the tournament, Goretzka has continued his form and has managed to find the back of the net six times in 14 appearances for club and country this season.
With Henrikh Mkhitaryan being frozen out of the squad by Jose Mourinho, Goretzka looks like the ideal replacement.
