Athletic Bilbao want to bring midfielder Ander Herrera back to the club this summer, four years after selling him to Manchester United.
The Basque Country outfit are willing to make the 28-year old their highest paid player to get the deal done.
Herrera’s contract with United was set to expire this summer, although the club activated an optional one-year extension clause.
Bilbao were hoping to sign him before United activated the clause, although according to Spanish outlet AS as cited by MailOnline, they are still keen to pursue a deal to bring him back to Spain in this transfer window.

Herrera was born in Bilbao and despite coming through Real Zaragoza’s academy, the Spain international spent three years with Los Leones before signing for the Red Devils.
Having struggled for consistent game time last season with competition heavy in Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matić and Scott McTominay, Herrera could look to move back home for more regular football.
While Bilbao are unlikely to be able to afford him this summer and may have to wait until next summer, United are understood to be listening to offers, although they aren’t willing to let him leave before a suitable replacement can be identified.
