Manchester United ready to make move for Toby Alderweireld

Manchester United are ready to make their move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld now that Belgium have been knocked out of the World Cup, according to a report on the Express.

The Spurs defender was linked with a move to the Red Devils prior to the tournament in Russia and now United Cheif Executive Ed Woodward is preparing to make a move for him.

United manager Jose Mourinho is desperate to strengthen his defensive unit ahead of the new season as he looks to help his side challenge for the Premier League title.

Alderweireld’s future at Spurs is uncertain and Mourinho wants a Premier League proven central defender, with Alderweireld at the top of his transfer list.

The 29-year-old could leave for as little as £25m next summer due to a clause in his contract so the north London club won’t stand in his way if a fair offer is made for him.

Spurs have valued the Belgian at £60m but United are hopeful that they can negotiate the price down to £50m, but as they have found out before, Spurs drive a hard bargain.

If Alderweireld can’t be signed then United also have their eyes on AC Milan centre-back Leonardo Bonucci.
