Manchester United made it four wins in a row when they beat 10-man Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Old Trafford last Saturday. Michael Carrick has enjoyed a superb start to life as caretaker manager since replacing Ruben Amorim in early January.
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring with a slick strike in the first half before Bruno Fernandes confirmed all three points with a clever finish off his shin late on. The win means United moved to within three points of third-place Aston Villa.
The Red Devils’ job was made easier for them when Cristian Romero was sent off for a reckless foul on Casemiro early on. The visitors had been in the game before the Argentine defender was handed his marching orders.
Romero has been under scrutiny lately after calling out Spurs’ owners, and he has been heavily criticised for letting his team down last weekend. There is an expectation that he will leave the North Londoners this summer, and Paul Scholes would ‘love’ him to head to Old Trafford.
Paul Scholes wants Tottenham’s Romero at Manchester United
Romero’s future is uncertain despite penning a new four-year deal with the Lilywhites in August 2025. The 27-year-old was appointed club captain following Son Heung-min’s departure to MLS side Los Angeles FC.
The 2022 World Cup winner’s actions last weekend have been condemned by many, but Scholes couldn’t hide his admiration for the Argentina international. United’s former iconic midfielder admitted he wishes he played for the Reds.
Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast:
“Do you know what? I love him. He’s p****d off at Spurs, isn’t he? He doesn’t want to be there. He’s having a go at the crowd and the board I think his head has checked out a bit. But I’d love him at Manchester United. I just love his character.”
Romero is regarded as one of the best central defenders in the Premier League and has been crucial for Spurs this season. He has not only put in impressive defensive performances but also contributed in attack with six goals and four assists in 28 games across competitions.
The Argentine’s temperament is a concern, and his red card against United was his second this season. He has also been booked eight times, but Scholes clearly likes his fiery personality.
There is no indication that the Red Devils will be prioritising a new centre-back this summer. Harry Maguire’s contract expires in June, but the 32-year-old’s excellent displays this season could lead to a renewal if he accepts a wage cut.
Romero set to leave Tottenham this summer
If United intend to strengthen their defence, then a move to Romero could be a possibility. He reportedly has interest from La Liga and another European league and is “going to leave Tottenham” this summer, per Argentine journalist Gaston Edul.
Romero has been with the Lilywhites since the summer of 2022, when he arrived from Serie A club Atalanta for £42.5 million. He has made 152 appearances and was part of the Spurs side that won the Europa League last season with a 1-0 win against the Reds in the final.
There’s no word on how much Romero could cost, but he only signed a new deal last summer. While he has proven Premier League experience, he is a risk, and even his club’s fans acknowledge this.
