The partnership between Manchester United defenders Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez has been at the core of the defensive brilliance under Michael Carrick. The pair have been superb, helping the Reds remain unbeaten since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January.
Their run as partners at the back ended in United’s 1-0 win over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium last night. Martinez sat out the victory over the Toffees due to a calf injury, and Leny Yoro played instead of the Argentine.
The Red Devils weren’t at their best on the night, but got the job done thanks to Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian striker came off the bench and scored a stunning counter-attacking goal to clinch all three points.
Martinez might face Palace
Next up for United is the visit of a struggling Crystal Palace side, who are in turmoil amid a dismal run of form. The pressure is growing on Oliver Glasner, who is at odds with his club’s fans after recent comments about remembering where they came from.
Carrick looks likely to be able to call upon Martinez for the Palace game as his injury isn’t serious. Mail Sport reports that 28-year-old’s calf problem is “minor” and that he could even be in contention for Sunday’s clash with the Eagles at Old Trafford.
Carrick might feel the Palace game is the right time to rotate, and that might mean handing Maguire a rest. The veteran English defender has started each of the interim coach’s six games in charge.
Martinez was ever-present before sitting out the Everton win and impressed with dominant displays at the back. He’s made 14 league appearances this season, helping his side keep three clean sheets, including in a 2-0 win over Manchester City.
Man United in control of top four race
United have UEFA Champions League football in their hands following the victory at Hill Dickinson. Carrick’s men sit fourth, and are breathing down Aston Villa’s necks heading into the final stretch of the season.
Just three points separate the Reds from the third-placed Villans ahead of this weekend’s fixtures. Unai Emery’s side are away to rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday (February 27th).
A top four finish could go a long way in determining whether the club appoint Carrick on a permanent contract. He has overseen five wins and one draw in six games, including a remarkable 3-2 win against Arsenal at the Emirates.
United still need to be wary of Chelsea, who are three points behind them in fifth. The Blues face a daunting trip to their London rivals Arsenal on Sunday.
Liverpool are level on points with Liam Rosenior’s men but in sixth-place on goal difference. The Merseysiders host West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday.
