- Manchester United could move for Fermin Lopez
- The Spanish forward could cost up to €100 million
- It is unclear at this time if Barcelona would be prepared to welcome a bid
Manchester United have set their sights on Fermin Lopez, with reports in Spain suggesting they are willing to spend up to €100 million (£86.5 million) to bring him in, according to El Chiringuito TV.7
Despite the interest—and the lucrative fee—it remains unclear whether FC Barcelona would entertain a bid for Fermin Lopez, who plays a key role in Hansi Flick’s plans.
Lopez attracted interest from Chelsea last summer, but he turned down the move and signed a new deal that keeps him at FC Barcelona until 2031.
Could Lopez fit in at United?
Predominantly an attacking midfielder who can operate on either wing or in a deeper role, Lopez would be a natural fit for a Manchester United side looking to strengthen its midfield this summer.
With Casemiro set to depart on 30 June when his contract expires, Jason Wilcox and his recruitment team have already begun scouring the market for replacements.
While Lopez would not offer a like-for-like replacement for Casemiro, he would add depth to the midfield while giving Michael Carrick—or whoever is next in charge of the squad—greater flexibility in how he shapes his side.
His contract runs until 2031, but if Manchester United felt particularly reckless, they could always trigger the €500 million release clause.
They won’t, of course. Spanish law requires footballers to include release clauses in their contracts, which is why clubs often set them in the hundreds of millions.
Let’s look at Lopez’s league stats so far this season.
| Games | 23 |
| Starts | 13 |
| Goals | 5 |
| Assists | 8 |
| Big chances created | 13 |
| Balls recovered per game | 2.9 |
| Successful dribbles per game | 1.9 |
As we can see from the stats, whilst Lopez has featured in 23 of Barcelona’s 29 league matches this season, he has started in just 13 of them.
That has translated to 1,318 minutes—57 per appearance—a role that leans more towards rotation than first choice.
But there is, of course, a reason for this.
Lopez’s time at Barcelona
While the 22-year-old attracts strong interest and earns high praise from Hansi Flick, he remains just 22.
On top of that, he faces strong competition for the No.10 role in the squad. Fellow former La Masia stars Pedri, Gavi and Lamine Yamal can all drift inside from wider areas, while Dani Olmo—signed for €60 million in August 2024—operates most naturally in that position.
That leaves Hansi Flick to juggle his options, balancing the side while managing minutes across a crowded midfield.
Is it time for Lopez to move on?
The likelihood is that Fermin Lopez would not be leaving Barcelona in the summer.
He has not only become a fan favourite but also earned strong backing from Hansi Flick, who praised both his performances and his decision to reject Chelsea.
“He’s a fantastic player. The decision was his and I’m glad he stayed. He’s a player who embodies the Barcelona DNA. I really enjoyed his performance,” Flick revealed after the Spaniard scored twice against Sparta Prague in the Champions League.
While he would bring an exciting spark to Manchester United, it is unlikely that Lopez would leave the club he has been at since the age of 12.
