- Manchester United are monitoring a Premier League manager as a potential candidate
- Michael Carrick could be let go despite impressive results
- Crystal Palace are expected to provide tough competition to United in the managerial race.
Following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United appointed Michael Carrick as their interim manager. So far, the Red Devils have been on an impressive run under the new tactician.
Carrick has successfully taken United to third place in the Premier League and within touching distance of Champions League qualification next season, which seemed far-fetched just a few months back.
As a result, it is only natural for fans to wonder if Carrick will be handed the reins at United permanently after his immediate positive impact on the squad. While that is not ruled out as of now, the Red Devils’ board are also keeping an eye on alternatives in case they decide otherwise.
In fact, it looks like a Crystal Palace-linked coach is still on their radar as a potential replacement. The manager in question is current Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola.
According to Mirror, United are interested in Iraola as a potential candidate in case Carrick is relieved of his duties, but will face stiff competition from Crystal Palace and other clubs.
Iraola Still on United’s Radar
Iraola has been phenomenal for Bournemouth, helping the team reach new heights. However, he is expected to leave the Cherries after his contract expires at the end of this season.
Apart from United and Palace, Athletic Bilbao and Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs showing interest in the Spanish tactician. So reaching an agreement would not come easy for the Red Devils if they indeed wish to have him in their dugout.
That said, Carrick has already done more than enough to keep his job next season and make his position permanent. It’s now up to United to make the final call on his future.
How does Carrick Compare to Iraola
Based only on the period since Carrick took over at United this season, he is miles ahead of Iraola. The English manager has lost only once, winning seven out of his 10 matches in charge in the Premier League so far.
However, when it comes to experience and long-term results, that is where Iraola shines. So United will have to decide carefully whether to put their trust in someone who has helped them through a difficult period or bring in someone tried and tested.
Then again, Carrick does have the added benefit of knowing United inside out, having played for the club for more than a decade, which tilts things in his favour.
Nevertheless, the season is not over yet, and there is still work to be done for United. So the managerial decision can wait until all matches are done and dusted.
