Manchester United moving on from Casemiro is the right decision

  • Casemiro insists he’s leaving Manchester United
  • Fans want him to stay but the time has come
  • There’s one ideal replacement

Fans might be eager for Casemiro to stay for one more year but the time has come for the Brazilian midfielder to leave Manchester United. A sensational season has led to calls from many, including Bruno Fernandes, for him to remain at Old Trafford.

Casemiro is enjoying his best campaign in Red Devils colours, playing a key role in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification. He’s come up trumps with seven goals and two assists in 29 league games.

The 34-year-old insisted during the international break that his decision was final and that he’s leaving the Reds. It will be an emotional farewell, but one that had to happen.

Time to say Goodbye

Football is a funny old game with situations changing week by week. It seemed certain that Casemiro would be moved in last summer after a dissapointing 2024-25 campaign.

The former Real Madrid man looked off the pace for large portions of it and even settled for a place on the bench until the second half of the season. Rumours of a potential Saudi Pro League switch or an MLS move intensified, especially in January.

Casemiro stayed put and showed incredible resilience to play his way back into Ruben Amorim’s starting lineup. He then returned to his former best, putting in consistent performances that nearly clinched the Europa League trophy.

The reason it feels right for the Brazilian to move on isn’t down to his attitude nor his displays this season. It’s because United need to mark a new era, with a new head coach and a new holding midfielder.

Time to Face the Strange

Casemiro’s lucrative wages have long been a nuisance for INEOS and that’s certainly a huge factor to take into consideration. But so too is the likelihood of Michael Carrick staying on and needing to build a new team in his image.

That starts in midfield with a new long-term anchor required, one that has the energy to play in the Premier League and the Champions League. The transfer chiefs need to not just replace him but do so with one of their biggest signings since INEOS took over the club’s sporting operations.

Elliot Anderson ticks all the boxes, with a profile befitting a United midfielder. He has been superb at Nottingham Forest this season, and if you’re spending over £100m on a player, he’s the one who is worth it.

The biggest setback of losing Casemiro is the loss of his presence in the dressing room. He’s a proven winner, with five Champions League winners’ medals to his name.

That said, this squad isn’t ready to be challenging for the European title and is still in a transitional phase. The attack was sorted last summer and now is the time to tackle the midfield with major changes.
