Mason Mount Will be Amused by Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea behaviour
  • Mason Mount joined Manchester United from Chelsea in 2023
  • Enzo Fernandez taunted Red Devils midfielder year later
  • Argentine now toying with Real Madrid move

Enzo Fernandez became a fan favourite at Chelsea when he squared up to Mason Mount during a clash against Manchester United. The Argentine has often looked to provoke the English midfielder whenever the latter has faced his former club.

It’s an easy way to win over the Blues fanbase, given the circumstances surrounding Mount’s move to United in the summer of 2023. He left his boyhood club and joined the Red Devils in a £60m deal.

This left a sour taste in the mouths of Chelsea supporters who, for the most part, adored him. They watched him lift the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and expected him to push on and become one of their all-time greats.

Wake Up Call For The Blues

‘Money Mase’ was the label handed to him once he decided to take a risk and head to Old Trafford. Disagreements between the player and the west Londoners over a contract renewal led to his departure.

During the 4-3 loss to his former club back in April 2024, he bumped heads with Fernandez. The Argentine, supposedly ‘proper Chels’, tapped the badge in front of the Blues’ academy player, an obvious taunt and act to please his club’s faithful.

Yet, two years on and it’s Fernandez who is looking towards the Stamford Bridge exit door and his approach is undoubtedly worse than Mount’s. He is begging for Real Madrid to come calling in the summer.

Fernandez’s behaviour has caused such uproar that he has been suspended by his club. He won’t face Port Vale in this weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final or play against Manchester City in the league next week.

Mount might have broken Blues’ hearts by moving to one of their Premier League rivals. But he didn’t push for the move, nor did he talk up a potential new destination.

Maybe Mount Was Right?

As controversial as his transfer was, he tried to leave amicably, releasing a lengthy video to fans explaining his decision. He even highlighted that it “wasn’t an easy decision” and that he was “grateful.”

“Hi Chelsea fans, given the speculation over the last six months, this may not come as a surprise to you, but it doesn’t make it any easier to tell you that I’ve made the decision to leave Chelsea.”

He added:

“I feel you deserve more than just a written statement, so I wanted to tell you directly how grateful I’ve been for all of your support over the last 18 years. I know some of you won’t be happy with my decision, but it’s what’s right for me at this moment in my career.”

Chelsea’s nosedive this season has led to growing speculation about the futures of their star players. Their fans and Fernandez might now realise Mount didn’t want to leave the Blues, he wanted to leave the oncoming mess that has taken hold under the new ownership.

Mount hasn’t exactly lived up to expectations at United, and that’s sadly been down to a series of injury setbacks. But he is one of the most likeable characters in the dressing room, and the same can’t be said for Fernandez at Stamford Bridge.
