- Manchester United are keen on Blackburn youngster
- Tom Atcheson is of interest
- Could follow in Phil Jones’ footsteps
Manchester United are once again looking to the Championship for their next defensive addition.
The Reds have a proud history of plucking talent from the second tier, and the current scouting network under Jason Wilcox has identified a young centre-back who is rapidly making a name for himself.
The 19-year-old only made his senior debut in December, but has quickly established himself as a regular under Michael O’Neill at Blackburn Rovers. O’Neill’s faith in the teenager has extended beyond club level, too, with the defender handed his full international debut for Northern Ireland last month. Now, a host of Premier League giants are circling.
Manchester United Chasing Blackburn Youngster
TEAMtalk reports that Blackburn have moved to secure one of their brightest prospects by tying him down to a new long-term deal at Ewood Park. However, growing interest from top clubs could still test their resolve.
Sources indicate O’Neill has played a key role in Blackburn’s decision to offer fresh terms. The youngster is thriving under his guidance, as well as working closely with former Rovers defender Phil Jones.
There are already comparisons being drawn between the 19-year-old and Phil Jones, who famously progressed through Blackburn’s ranks before earning a high‑profile move to United.
A similar pathway could emerge, with the Reds among a number of clubs keeping a close eye on his development, but they are far from alone. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Sunderland, Everton, Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion have all made checks on the defender in recent weeks.
Interest is also building from across Europe. Bundesliga sides RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are tracking his progress, while Serie A sides Atalanta and Napoli are monitoring his situation.
O’Neill’s verdict on Atcheson
The player in question is Tom Atcheson, a 19‑year‑old centre‑back who first joined Blackburn as a 12‑year‑old and made his first‑team debut aged just 16 years and 343 days in August 2023. Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph last week, Northern Ireland and Blackburn manager Michael O’Neill paid tribute to his young defender:
“He’s someone we knew about when he was in (Northern Ireland’s) Under‑19s and Under‑21s, we knew had a lot of potential. He’s got a great temperament. He’s very calm, he’s balanced, and I think we’ve seen that in recent games.”
Blackburn’s new deal reflects their determination to keep hold of Atcheson and continue his development at Ewood Park. But with elite clubs circling both domestically and abroad, they may yet face a major battle to retain one of their most promising young talents.
For Manchester United, adding a defender of his profile would be a smart long‑term investment, especially with the club’s history of turning Championship gems into first‑team regulars.
