- Manchester United forward puts his backing behind Michael Carrick
- The interim boss has excelled so far at the club
- Amad has started eight out of 10 games under Carrick
Manchester United forward Amad Diallo backed interim boss Michael Carrick to take the role full-time. The Ivorian spoke during a press conference in Dublin on Tuesday.
Amad has spoken highly of Carrick, who is in pole position to land the United job on a permanent basis. He said (via Simon Stone of BBC Sport):
“From a personal view, he’s the right man.”
Carrick has been in charge since January, when he replaced Ruben Amorim. This is his second stint in the dugout after previously holding a caretaker role back in 2021.
Amad suggested he is a popular figure in the dressing room and knows how to get United competing at the top of English football again:
“He has a lot of experience; he knows the club and has the DNA. His relationship with every player is very good. Sometimes this kind of manager can bring the club where they belong.”
Amad Enjoying Carrick Spell
In Carrick’s 10 games in charge, he has won seven, drawn two, and lost one. As a result, United have shifted from outside UEFA Champions League contention to looking close to securing a place in Europe’s top competition next season.
Amad has featured heavily throughout that run, starting eight of the 10 matches and playing 715 of a possible 900 minutes.
Carrick remains the leading option for a reason. He may not dominate headlines, but he has laid down a structure the club can build on.
Amad Pleased with Maguire Contract Extension
Amad also spoke about Harry Maguire’s new contract following the announcement on Tuesday morning. The English centre-back has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal.
The Ivorian winger spoke highly of the Englishman and his leadership qualities:
“Harry has been a good captain, one of them. He’s a big leader, he talks to everyone—especially the young lads coming from the academy. It’s important for the team, and we’re really happy for him.”
Maguire has been a key man in Carrick’s team, not just on the pitch but off of it. His years of experience are helping the English coach and it bodes well for the future should he indeed also stay on beyond this season.
