- Jadon Sancho is leaving Manchester United
- The English attacker is on loan at Aston Villa
- Borussia Dortmund open to re-signing him
The Jadon Sancho experiment at Manchester United is finally limping towards its conclusion. Five years after his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund, the 26-year-old winger is approaching free agency when his contract expires this June.
Currently on loan at Aston Villa, Sancho has managed just one goal and three assists in 31 appearances this season.
What was once a self-described “dream come true” for the England international now looks destined to peter out in abject fashion. After struggling in his first two-and-a-half seasons at Manchester United, Sancho impressed during a loan spell back at Dortmund but again underwhelmed at Chelsea.
His current spell at Villa has proven equally difficult. Now, however, his former German employers have given him a glimmer of hope.
Dortmund confirm Sancho interest
Borussia Dortmund sporting managing director Lars Ricken has confirmed that the Bundesliga club is considering bringing Sancho back for a third spell.
Speaking to Sport Bild, Ricken laid out the club’s transfer strategy. “We are currently looking at a lot of players and analysing them. We check whether they can make us better. We are doing the same with Jadon.”
The German outfit are seriously exploring a reunion, though any homecoming would require Sancho to accept a substantial reduction in his current salary. Reports from Sky Germany suggest his current earnings are around £15m per year, a figure Dortmund cannot match. Still, the door has been opened.
Sancho made his breakthrough at Dortmund between 2017 and 2021, scoring 53 goals and providing 67 assists in 158 appearances. He returned on loan for the second half of the 2023/24 season. A third stint would be unusual, but not impossible.
United’s expensive mistake nears its end
For Manchester United, Sancho’s departure will bring little celebration but relief. The winger arrived with enormous fanfare but never delivered consistently. His relationship with Erik ten Hag soured publicly, and loan moves have failed to revive his career. When his contract expires next month, United will cut its losses on one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history.
Dortmund are not only looking at Sancho. Ricken also confirmed they are seeking an offensive player who brings quality and can help immediately without an unrealistic transfer fee.
But Sancho’s name is on the list. Whether he accepts the pay cut and returns to the club where he became a star remains to be seen. For United fans, the only question now is how quickly the exit door can be opened.
