- Manchester United won’t be signing Nico Schlotterbeck
- German extends deal with Borussia Dortmund
- Defensive problems need addressing
Manchester United had reportedly been tempted to try and sign Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund this summer. That transfer will not materialise after the German centre-back signed a new deal.
As the 26-year-old had just one year remaining in his contract, United saw it as a cost-effective option for the summer. However, the defender has seemingly used the English giants as leverage. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that he had indeed signed a new contract with Dortmund until June 2031.
Rebuilding the backline has become a possible focus for INEOS amid concerns over Matthijs de Ligt. Lisandro Martinez has returned to training ahead of the Leeds United game, but his injury record isn’t too convincing.
The bulk of the headlines this summer is about Casemiro leaving, and some are expecting Manuel Ugarte to be sold. One or two new midfielders aside, a new centre-back might also be on the cards, even with Harry Maguire extending his contract.
Why Schlotterbeck Slipped Away
Reports from Manchester Evening News confirm that upon signing, Dortmund inserted a release clause into the contract. This means Manchester United would have to spend between £43.6 million and £52.3 million for the versatile defender. On the other hand, the defender’s transfer fee has now come to light.
While the amount might seem like a bargain, the German outlet Kicker confirms it as the only way to approach the player. Moreover, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona also pursued Schlotterbeck.
United director of recruitment Christoph Vivell, with extensive knowledge of the Bundesliga, is expected to keep an eye on the player. Reports suggest the club will not proceed with a potential transfer until a decision on the next permanent manager is made.
United’s Defensive Issues
Michael Carrick’s arrival has helped United look past major issues. The winning mentality has been rekindled, but the defence hasn’t always been rock solid. Since that Manchester City victory in January, United have conceded 11 goals and managed just 3 clean sheets.
Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire have been the central figures during most of this period. Injury has ruled out De Ligt, while Martínez returns after recovery and is likely to play against Leeds United on Monday.
With so many issues currently, the destination, Europe, is still in the side’s hands. But signing Schlotterbeck has clearly hit a roadblock. If the Reds do want a new centre-back they should look elsewhere.
