Michael Carrick can win Man United managerial race with Leeds victory

  • Michael Carrick’s side have only lost once in Premier League
  • Victory against Leeds could cement his position with INEOS

When Michael Carrick took on the role of interim boss at Manchester United in January, he asked for the blessing of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 44-year-old played 319 games for United under Ferguson, cementing his legendary status on the pitch whilst initially being brought in as a replacement for Roy Keane in 2006. In his own right, he is on track to become a successful prodigy of Ferguson’s as a manager, whether that be for his former club or not.

However, the prospect of him becoming the permanent manager looks more like a reality by the day. Several other candidates will be considered, but you can only imagine that INEOS will stray away from Carrick if they can appoint a superstar name.

The Process of Elimination

When Carrick first stepped into the dugout, the rumour mill was in overdrive. The vacancy has attracted ‘Category A’ heavyweight names like Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Roberto De Zerbi, and Mauricio Pochettino. However, with wins accumulating and time passing, Carrick’s stock continued to rise. Ultimately, the Pochettino links died down, and De Zerbi joined Spurs instead.

He effectively eclipsed the ‘Category B’ candidates in the Premier League. This was the likes of Oliver Glasner, Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola. By beating these managers in his way to guiding United to third place, Carrick has eliminated the hat of names by himself. It has left INEOS with a good headache to either keep Carrick or go all out for a big name in the summer.

There are just seven more games to prove his worth. Wins against Arsenal and Manchester City have been the standout victories. However, the game against Leeds will pose as a high-pressure environment that can make or break his candidacy.

Victory Against Leeds Builds Momentum

A victory at Elland Road would tighten United’s grip on Champions League football for next season. By Monday night, the Reds could sit ten points clear with only six games remaining. With tough fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool looming, securing wins there would likely guarantee a place in Europe’s elite competition with games to spare.

Carrick has quietly established himself as the cost-effective option, appealing to the balance sheets while connecting with fans in a more organic way than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Unlike previous “DNA” appointments, Carrick has managerial success to point toward. He kept Middlesbrough competitive despite the squad being ransacked multiple times. Despite this, he guided Middlesbrough to the Carabao Cup semi-finals in 2024.

He knows the club inside out, having served as a legendary player, assistant coach, and interim boss across two distinct eras. The shortlist of alternatives is thinning out too, which works heavily in his favour. With PSG reportedly close to finalising a new contract for Luis Enrique, the shortlist is growing ever shorter. By May, Nagelsmann could be the only viable elite candidate.

Ultimately, Carrick understands exactly what a victory against Leeds means. Red Devils fans have long craved a boss who ‘gets it’. If United triumph, keep a close eye on Carrick’s reaction. More than just three points, a win here moves him one step closer to the permanent gig.
