Andre Onana is still eager to be a success at Manchester United despite the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s woeful spell thus far. His future has seemed likely to lie away from Old Trafford ahead of the summer transfer window.
Having spent the season on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor, Onana looks set for the exit door. The club will surely be keen to move him on as their signing of Senne Lammens has paid off.
Lammens arrived at United from Belgian side Royal Antwerp last summer for an initial £18.1m. He has since become the undisputed number one, appearing 26 times in the league and keeping five clean sheets.
Andre Onana Wants Back In
Onana’s loan move came after he started the season as backup to Altay Bayindir. A poor spell with the Reds led to him losing his place as Ruben Amorim’s number one.
The 30-year-old was handed a lifeline when he started for United against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup. But his response was probably one of the worst goalkeeping performances in the club’s history.
Onana didn’t appear for the Red Devils again and was sent on loan to Turkey. But he seems eager to turn things around once he ends his temporary spell at the Papara Park.
According to Simon Stone of BBC Sport, the former Inter Milan shot-stopper’s mindset is to return and be part of United’s pre-season. He wants to prove to whoever is in charge that he deserves to be at the club and should be part of their plans.
Onana still believes he has a future with the Reds and isn’t giving up. He has just over two years on his contract and it seems he’ll make life difficult for INEOS if they attempt to offload him.
No Way Andre
While the Cameroonian’s mentality is admirable, there is no reason he should be staying at the club. He was given countless opportunities to bounce back and failed to do so.
Onana has a really likable personality but that’s not enough for United to consider handing him a second chance. If he wants to continue as a starting goalkeeper at this stage of his career, he needs to move on.
Even if he thinks he can first start off as Lammens’ backup, that is wishful thinking. Radek Vitek is the solution given the young Czech shot-stopper’s fine spell on loan at Bristol City.
Onana reportedly earns £120,000 per week at United which isn’t a salary INEOS should be willing to pay a number two weekly. Vitek is young and ready to take over as the club’s cup competition goalkeeper.
