  • Ayden Heaven had a standout match
  • United beat Chelsea 1-0

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has said that, whilst the club’s recruitment has come under heavy criticism over the past decade, they got it completely right with the signing of youngster Ayden Heaven.

For the first time under Michael Carrick, the 19-year-old started—and he delivered a commanding performance as United beat rivals Chelsea 1-0.

Prior to this fixture, Heaven had featured in just four matches under the interim head coach, playing a total of only 15 minutes.

The English prospect, however, did not allow that to faze him.

He produced a standout display, shutting down a dangerous Chelsea attack and preventing them from breaking through.

Heaven rose to the occasion, operating in an unusual pairing alongside Noussair Mazraoui.

In a must-win match for United—one in which all four first-choice centre-backs, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs De Ligt, and Leny Yoro, were unavailable—Heaven stepped up and anchored just the club’s sixth clean sheet of the season.

He has now handed Carrick a genuine selection dilemma ahead of the upcoming fixture against Brentford.

Chelsea 0-1 Man Utd: Ferdinand Hails Heaven Signing

On his X account following Manchester United’s victory, Ferdinand moved quickly to praise the young centre-back.

“The recruitment has taken a battering at Manchester United over the last 10 years & rightly so….

“But we need to shout out…

“Ayden Heaven – £1m [shocked face]

“Still lots to learn but called upon once again & delivered!”

For the first time since the 1-1 draw against Leeds United—Ruben Amorim’s final game in charge—Ayden Heaven showed exactly what Michael Carrick has been missing.

Cool, calm, and composed, Heaven marshalled United’s backline.

Despite Bruno Fernandes grabbing the headlines for his game-winning assist—his 18th of the Premier League season—the centre-back imposed himself, showing strength and determination to ensure United’s goal line remained untouched.

Carrick had already hinted at that trust.

Despite limited minutes, he spoke glowingly about Heaven ahead of the Chelsea clash.

“It’s hard to predict the future, but we’re delighted to have both of them,” he said on Friday, per the Manchester Evening News.

“And the age they are, playing for such a big club, is not always the case. It’s not always easy or straightforward, but I think the level they are at right now is a really good stage.

“The future is the future; they need to keep progressing and we’ll give them the opportunity to do that. They are probably in as good a place you can be at their age for centre-backs.”

Heaven’s Incredible Display

Following the match’s conclusion, it was captain Fernandes’s turn to heap praise on Heaven.

“Great performance, everyone,” the skipper said on TNT Sports.

“Ayden, amazing again, young kid, the guys in front put a shift in, Cas and Kobbie today were amazing, and vital for us to get the win today.”

The highest-rated player on SofaScore with a 7.9, Heaven delivered an authoritative display. Four blocked shots, three clearances, two tackles won, and seven ground duels won.

Just five games are remaining in this Premier League season for Manchester United, with fixtures against Brentford, Liverpool, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Win just two of those, and United will guarantee a place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
