- Will Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgy, and Matthijs De Ligt be back
Manchester United have received updates on their injured players as the Red Devils gear up to face Brentford in a key clash on Monday, 27 April.
Carrick and co defeated Champions League-chasing Chelsea 1-0 on 18 April, a result that delivered a significant boost in their pursuit of qualification.
They now face a stern test in Brentford, who harbour ambitions of reaching the Champions League themselves.
Sitting 10 points clear of both Chelsea and Brentford, a win would all but secure qualification for Europe’s premier competition, with United targeting a return for the first time since 2023.
United navigated the Chelsea clash without a host of key players, yet a makeshift defensive line—including Noussair Mazraoui at centre-back—proved resolute enough not only to beat the Blues, but to preserve a clean sheet.
Man United vs Brentford: Injury Updates
If there are two certainties, it is that Harry Maguire will return to the starting lineup after serving his two-match ban following his red card against Bournemouth. He was handed an additional one-game suspension for his conduct towards fourth official Matt Donohue.
Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez will miss the next two matches and will not feature again until 9 May, serving a three-game suspension for ‘violent conduct’ after tugging on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair in a 2-1 defeat to Leeds.
This absence rules him out of the upcoming fixture against Brentford, as well as the crunch clash against Liverpool, where United aim to finish above their rivals for the first time since the 2022/23 season.
Updates have emerged regarding the fitness of Leny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu, with both defenders edging closer to a return in the coming weeks.
In Carrick’s pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea, the interim manager said:
“Hopefully it’s only [a] small [issue] but he’s obviously not ready for tonight,” before kick-off at Stamford Bridge. It’s part of football, you know? We’ve got a pretty good squad, in terms of injuries really. There’s Leny, there’s Matthijs, who’s out for a bit longer, and there’s Patrick [Chinazaekpere Dorgu].”
As for Dorgu, the exact timeline remains unclear, but an early-May return appears most plausible.
The hybrid left-back/winger travelled with the squad to their training camp in Kildare, Ireland, and is “back on the [training] pitch,” though not yet match-ready.
For De Ligt, however, uncertainty still clouds his return. After sustaining a back injury against Crystal Palace on 30 November, he has not featured since, and a return this season now appears increasingly unlikely.
What next for Carrick and co
With just five games left in the Premier League season, the sooner Carrick has a full squad at his disposal, the better.
Despite performing admirably with a Frankenstein-esque back-line against Chelsea, fixtures against Brentford and Liverpool will pose a far sterner examination.
For those encounters, Carrick will want to call upon his more seasoned figures—players capable of guiding the side’s youthful core through high-stakes moments with greater authority.
