- Manchester United youth academy star names his inspiration
- Jim Thwaites talks about Lisandro Martinez
- When will the Argentine be back from injury?
Manchester United youth academy star Jim Thwaites has named Argentine centre-back Lisandro Martinez as his biggest inspiration, with the first-team defender proving highly influential on the youngster during training.
Thwaites recently earned a call-up to the United first team for their fixture against Chelsea, where a solitary Matheus Cunha strike settled the contest as United held on for a 1-0 victory.
The young midfielder did not make an appearance, though after playing 120 minutes in the FA Youth Cup semi-final the night prior, his absence came as little surprise.
Thwaites played a pivotal role in that semi-final. Across 120 minutes, he helped United secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the London-based side, booking a place in the final against rivals Manchester City for just the second time in FA Youth Cup history.
He will now look to cap that run with silverware before turning his focus towards the first team.
Thwaites on Martinez and FA Youth Cup victory
Thwaits was asked who at United is the biggest inspiration on him and his growth as a footballer. He responded:
“Martinez. Just because he’s helped me so much in the training sessions and coming into the first team environment.”
Martinez has been at United since July 2022 and has been one of the best defensive signings since the Sir Alex Ferguson era. He has made 120 appearances, putting in excellent displays, particularly his ball-playing abilities, along with his aggressive defensive style.
Thwaites will soon be hoping to be playing alongside Martinez in the senior team. The 18-year-old also spoke about his recent inclusion in Carrick’s squad against Chelsea:
“Obviously, I was over the moon and it’s another good moment for me and another good experience. I just tried to take it all in on the night. Yeah, I was just over the moon and looked forward to it. It was a massive, massive three points and really good to get the win over the line. The scenes in the dressing room were unbelievable, so it was good.”
Thwaites – Present and Future
A dead-ball specialist, Jim Thwaites has gained traction over recent months for his beautifully struck curling free-kicks. His effort in the Manchester derby drew comparisons with David Beckham.
Yet it is his all-round game that has impressed most this season. While his movement on the ball surpasses many around him, Thwaites struggled off the ball last season, rarely committing to tackles.
He has since addressed that side of his game, while his passing has developed into a real strength, with the 18-year-old now capable of switching play across the pitch with ease.
In a recent episode of Inside Carrington, Darren Fletcher suggested Thwaites’ development into a complete midfielder is no coincidence, highlighting his work with young central players.
The Under-18 coach said:
“We were brought up to be the all-around midfielder. So I think if you look at the history of the club they’re the role models. It is Bryan Robson, it’s Paul Ince, it’s Roy Keane, it’s Nicky Butt; they have specialists within that.”
He added:
“But we were always brought up [with the coaching] that you did everything. You attacked, you ran forward, you ran back, you became the all-around midfielder, and that’s something that I strive to do.”
For a young central midfielder, few role models prove more fitting than Fletcher. With pre-season fast approaching, whoever takes charge will surely look to integrate Thwaites into those preparations.
