Manchester United Duo Playing Clear Role in Ayden Heaven’s Development

Share
  • Ayden Heaven faces bright future at Manchester United
  • Teenager being mentored by veterans at Old Trafford
  • Defender was excellent in makeshift defence versus Chelsea

When the coaching staff at Manchester United embraced Ayden Heaven last Saturday (18 April), it felt like more than just a well done.

It was a congratulations befitting all the hard work by the players and staff that went into the victory that saw United secure a crucial win at Stamford Bridge. It was a rare away clean sheet that has barely been achieved this season, let alone with a makeshift defence.

Heaven partnered right-back Noussair Mazraoui in central defence. He steadily kept out the firepower of the Blues, effectively ending their Champions League qualification hopes as well.

Two men in Michael Carrick‘s coaching staff have had a big part to play in Heaven’s development during 2025/26.

Carrick’s Staff Credited with Heaven Development

In a detailed report by Tyrone Marshall of the Manchester Evening News (MEN), Jonny Evans and Jonathan Woodgate have been credited with the teenager’s development at Carrington.

Marshall wrote: “Carrick’s staff have continued to work hard on his development, and Heaven has benefited from one-on-one sessions with Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans, in particular.”

The MEN journalist added: “The coaching staff have been supportive and there was obvious pride when they approached him on the pitch at Stamford Bridge, after a superb display in a gutsy defensive rearguard.”

The suspension for Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, as well as the long-term injury to Matthijs De Ligt, left United depleted. There was no seniority available at centre-back heading into the clash in West London.

Marshall wrote about the lead-up to the game, which originally had two centre-backs available. He said: “The coaching staff put a lot of work into a partnership between Heaven and Yoro at Carrington, only to see Yoro drop out through injury at late notice. That is why there is pride in how Heaven dealt with the upheaval during a tumultuous week.”

Old Trafford Future Bodes Well

Despite starting the game in an unnerving fashion, the 19-year-old grew steadily in the game. It grew to become one of his finest performances in United colours to date.

Former head coach Ruben Amorim was not shy to thrust Heaven into pressure during his time in charge. He truly believed in the young defender, which has continued into the current regime under Carrick as well. It has served Heaven well, despite the club’s rollercoaster season.

Since arriving from Arsenal, Heaven has had to wait for his oppourtunities. He has patiently learnt and honed his own craft, which has done him well for the current situation. INEOS officials have serious thinking to do in terms of recruiting at the back this summer.

However, one thing is certain: those within the INEOS bubble truly believe that Heaven and Yoro are the future of Manchester United. Whilst Yoro is not available, United fans will get a half-glimpse of that future. Even with Maguire’s return, Marshall writes that Heaven is “likely to stay in the team to face Brentford” on Monday (27 April).
