Manchester United Must Snub Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford Proposal

  • Barcelona must buy, or someone else will

Manchester United must push Barcelona to make a definitive decision on Marcus Rashford. This cannot drift into another summer of uncertainty. Barcelona want control; United must reclaim it.

The Reds need to turn down Barca’s latest proposal as they try to find away around paying a buy option for the Englishman. The Catalan side is pushing for a second-year loan, rather than paying the minimal €30 million (approximately £26m) for the English winger.

For a player with 26 goals and assists, it is almost ludicrous that United would even entertain the idea of another temporary deal. Rashford has his shortcomings, most players do, but he is averaging a goal or assist every 90 minutes this season. A player of his calibre commands more than a mere £26m.

Rashford’s Never-ending Saga

Reports claim that Barcelona are actively pushing for a second loan deal for the United forward. Talks are reportedly ongoing, but Barcelona remain reluctant to trigger the €30m clause.

If United reject the loan outright, the Catalan side may attempt to negotiate a reduced fee.

Rashford still carries the same flaws that defined his later years at United, but there are clear signs of progression. His work rate, once a major concern, had become detrimental—not just to his own game, but to the team’s overall structure.

Think of the side as a machine: when one cog fails to function, the entire system slows and begins to break down.

Jamie O’Hara labelled Rashford’s effort levels as “embarrassingly bad,” saying on talkSPORT in 2024: “When he gives the ball away, he doesn’t even try and win it back. There’s no urgency to his game.

“He only wants to make a run when he thinks he’s going to get in on goal or he’s going to get the ball. His work rate off the ball is embarrassingly bad. It’s so bad.”

This sentiment was echoed by journalist Dean Jones, who added: “His performance levels aren’t good enough and, more than that, his work rate is shambolic.”

However, Hansi Flick has been encouraged by Rashford’s development this season, even stating: “It’s not just about pressing with the ball, you also have to defend, but he’s (Rashford) doing things well and has adapted. We’re going to play against Atletico and they’re good on the wings.”

United now face a clear choice. Either cash in on a player regaining value, or allow another club to dictate terms once again.

Barcelona’s Financial Qualms

With Robert Lewandowski set to leave the Catalan side at the end of the season, Barcelona will be investing heavily into a new number nine.

Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid has come up in numerous conversations, though the Argentine has called the links with him at Barcelona a “snowball of lies.”

Regardless, Barcelona will be spending big money. This makes their reluctance to support Rashford even more insulting. United must force their hand, or pull Rashford back to Manchester and sell him on to another side.
