- Manchester United hone in on Newcastle full-back
- Could United pick up two Toon stars?
- What happens to Luke Shaw?
Manchester United are honing in on a young, high-potential left-back as they target Newcastle’s Lewis Hall. The Reds have also been linked with midfielder Sandro Tonali, Hall’s teammate, with the club exploring a potential summer transfer window that could see two players arrive from a direct Premier League rival.
It will be a revolving-door summer for the Red Devils, but questions remain over whether they will have enough in reserve to invest heavily in a new left-back.
Whilst Luke Shaw has performed well this season, there is no doubt that the Englishman remains extremely injury-prone, and United are actively planning for his long-term successor.
Most of the summer budget will likely funnel into midfield, however, as Casemiro prepares to depart the club—likely alongside Manuel Ugarte—when his contract expires on 30 June.

Man Utd Eyeing Lewis Hall
According to UtdDistrict, director of football Jason Wilcox is a huge admirer of Newcastle left-back Hall. The Englishman sits high on United’s left-back shortlist, though the club has yet to initiate contact with either the player or Newcastle.
At just 21 years of age, Hall firmly represents a left-back for the future. Highly versatile, across spells at both Chelsea and Newcastle, Hall has operated in a variety of roles—primarily at left-back, but also as a centre-back, defensive midfielder, central midfielder, left midfielder, attacking midfielder, and even on the left wing on two occasions.
That versatility, combined with his technical quality and composure beyond his years, makes him a compelling target for United. That profile has, unsurprisingly, attracted widespread attention, with Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, and other European heavyweights all tracking him ahead of a potential move this summer.
Hall also offers a strong presence on the ground, winning 4.6 duels per game—1.8 more than Shaw—while also averaging a higher number of ball recoveries. United are not only pursuing Hall, but also his teammate Tonali, as the club identifies the Italian as a potential successor to Casemiro.
Natural Luke Shaw successor?
As mentioned, United must plan for life after Shaw in the coming years. The left-back, however, has delivered a stellar campaign in red, particularly in terms of fitness.
Shaw has sustained just one injury this season, and it has not ruled him out of any matches. In the Premier League, he has featured in every game, accumulating 2,971 minutes—missing just 179 minutes in total.
That figure places him 18th for total minutes in the league, or 11th when excluding goalkeepers. If he features in any of United’s final three Premier League fixtures, it will mark the highest number of league appearances in his career.
But the left-back no longer possesses the same athletic edge. He rarely drives forward with the same intensity that once defined his game, and recent months have forced him to adapt his approach.
Those dangerous overlapping runs that once underpinned his play now appear less frequently, with the 29 injuries he has endured across 13 seasons at United clearly taking their toll.
That does not force Shaw out of contention against the likes of Hall. The full-back can still operate effectively at centre-back, and the former England international retains the quality required to perform at the highest level.
A new left-back this summer appears unlikely. The priority remains three world-class midfielders, with one tasked with replacing the departing Casemiro.
Whilst Shaw may gradually transition towards a reduced role in the coming years as the physical toll mounts, he still offers reliability in the present. But a lingering doubt always follows him onto the pitch—one slight twinge away from another spell on the sidelines.
