- New twist for possible Manchester United target
- Chelsea adamantly ruling out Palmer exit
- Blues set to miss out on European football
Manchester United have long been linked to a move for Chelsea attacking midfielder Cole Palmer.
It was only last month that the Blues star rubbished links to his boyhood fan club, claiming that he would “just laugh” at rumours linking him to Old Trafford. It was thought to have finally put those long-standing rumours to bed.
However, recent reports already shown that the links will never fully die for the Wythenshawe-born player. Palmer broke through at Manchester City, but ultimately wanted out to shine elsewhere. A return to the north has always been on the cards for the wider public.
A new twist in the saga has proven exactly why he may not be settled at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer Would “Consider” Old Trafford
According to Kieran Gill from the Daily Mail, Cole Palmer would privately “consider a move” to Manchester United.
Palmer’s history as a boyhood United supporter has kept rumours of a move alive, even during more successful periods. This season at Chelsea has been collectively underwhelming, with the Blues currently sitting in ninth place. The 24-year-old has endured a disruptive campaign due to injury, appearing just 27 times for his club. Despite these setbacks, he has still registered 10 goals and 3 assists across all competitions, proving that class is permanent.
Gill reiterated Chelsea’s firm stance on the player, insisting he is “not for sale” this summer. Given that the midfielder’s current contract runs until 2033. Following a two-year extension signed in 2024, any approach would be swiftly rejected. It would likely require an astronomical fee for the club to even entertain the thought of a departure.
The key factor in Palmer wanting a move is that the England international will not be playing in Europe as it stands. United, on the other hand, have qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2023/24.
United Should Continue to Ignore Interest
Ultimately, United should ignore the noise. Palmer’s injury record is a significant red flag for a squad already plagued with players on high wages not being available. Morgan Rogers represents a more robust and better-value option. If Michael Carrick stays on as boss, the Aston Villa midfielder would be the priority, having managed him at Middlesbrough.
Furthermore, United do not need another superstar signing. Bruno Fernandes is staying put, having just enjoyed his most successful individual season at Old Trafford. The United captain is the sole focal point and provider in the team.
From a boardroom perspective, this move makes little sense. While the Glazers might have chased the headlines, INEOS is unlikely to sanction such a deal. The current budget doesn’t allow for it either. It appears Palmer’s camp is sounding out a departure to gauge United’s interest. The club must do better than react to a fairytale homecoming for a Manchester-born player.
