- Luke Shaw names best player he has played with
- Fullback joined Manchester United in 2014
- Played with host of superstar names
Luke Shaw joined Manchester United in the summer of 2014, initially brought in by Louis van Gaal to replace Patrice Evra.
There were some big shoes to fill, and there have been serious question marks over Shaw’s reliability regarding his injury record at times. None more so than last season, where he started just five of the seven appearances he made. However, this season has been a complete turnaround as the Englishman is still on track to have started every Premier League game of the season.
Shaw is currently the longest-serving member of the United squad. Marcus Rashford is in second place, but his impending departure would mean that Diogo Dalot is next, having joined in 2018. Throughout his tenure at Old Trafford, Shaw has seen some superstar names walk in and out of that door.
None more so than one Frenchman, whom he praised in a recent interview.

Paul Pogba was ‘Scary Good’
While speaking with the club, Shaw discussed who he considered the best player he has played with during his time at United.
He replied: “For me, he [Paul Pogba] probably, for talent, was one of the best I’ve played with. He was scary good, he could do everything. And he could do everything so good.”
The full-back played alongside Pogba on 133 occasions during the Frenchman’s spell between 2016 and 2022. Their shared silverware came during the 2016/17 season under manager Jose Mourinho, where they won the Europa League, EFL Cup, and Community Shield together.
In 2018, Shaw similarly praised his former teammate: “He’s a wonderful guy and an even better player on the pitch. Honestly, he’s so important for us. It’s nice to have him in the team and around the place – he cheers everyone up and gives good vibes. For me, he’s one of the most important players, probably in the Premier League – he’s got everything.”
Despite becoming a World Cup winner in 2018, Pogba’s career at Old Trafford remains marked by an asterisk. Shaw touched upon that in his latest interview, saying:
“I just wish it worked out better here, but sometimes things are not meant to be and I feel like that, maybe at that time it wasn’t the right time for him here. But yeah, he was so special, honestly. Like it was so scary how good he was.”

High Praise from Shaw
It is significant praise for Shaw to rank Pogba as one of the best he has ever played with, especially considering the other superstars he has shared a dressing room with at Old Trafford. That long list includes the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Casemiro.
Shaw’s comments highlight the technical brilliance of Pogba and his personality on the training pitch. Pogba’s eccentric nature was only publicly marred by the British media, who scrutinised the midfielder’s every move during his time in England.
Pogba himself addressed his unfulfilled United career during a recent appearance on the ‘Rio Ferdinand Presents’ podcast. The 33-year-old admitted he wished things had gone better during his second stint in Manchester.
While the Frenchman’s legacy at the club is often debated by fans and pundits, the testimony from the club’s longest-serving player is yet another reminder of what the professionals really thought.
