- Manchester United featured in 0-0 draw on Saturday
- Scoreless results draw criticism from Wayne Rooney
- Former striker addressed need to invest this summer
On Saturday afternoon (9 May), Manchester United played out a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Sunderland in the Premier League.
The draw is only the fifth time that the Reds have dropped points under interim boss Michael Carrick. Yet, it was easily the dullest result in his tenure so far. United managed just one shot on target all game, which was taken by Matheus Cunha in the 93rd minute.
United don’t necessarily have anything to play for in the remaining fixtures. Yet, the standards from former players in particular remain high for this giant club.

‘Flat’ Manchester United Need Investments
United legend Wayne Rooney featured in the post-match analysis on the BBC Sport website. Speaking after the game, the former striker offered a blunt assessment: “Manchester United’s performance was flat. It felt like an ‘end of season’ game for both teams.”
The Red Devils had already confirmed Champions League qualification for next season following their 3-2 win against Liverpool last weekend. Earlier in the day, Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea kept the Merseyside club trailing in the race for third place. Following United’s draw, a six-point gap remains between the two sides with only two games left to play. Michael Carrick’s side also holds a slight advantage in goal difference, sitting at +15 compared to Liverpool’s +12.
Rooney continued: “But did the players that came in today for United do enough to prove that they should be at the club next season? Probably not.”
Squad rotation was forced upon Carrick, as Benjamin Sesko and Casemiro both missed out due to injury. Consequently, Joshua Zirkzee, Mason Mount, and Amad Diallo were promoted to the starting eleven. Zirkzee, in particular, was criticised for offering ‘absolutely nothing’ after a below-par performance.
Looking ahead, Rooney questioned what his former club requires to compete in Europe’s elite competition during the 2026/27 campaign. “It will be clear to Michael Carrick that there has to be significant investment this summer if they are to compete in the Champions League,” he noted.

Being on Holiday Mode is Not Sufficient
Some argue that because the season’s goals have already been exceeded, the players no longer have much to play for. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, many players across the league will become increasingly cautious about picking up injuries.
However, the United squad must respect the supporters who spent significant money to travel to the Northeast in the drenching rain. Today’s performance showed a total lack of respect for the faithful away fans.
Rooney is right to call out the players for being flat. Professional standards should never drop because a target has been met. It is hardly a trophy to achieve Champions League qualification, even if it is a significant achievement in the context of the last few seasons. If these players want to be part of the club’s future success, they must show the hunger to compete at all times. Yet, judging by that performance, some of these players will not even be here next season.
