Man Utd Try to ‘Close Deal’ for €45m Serie A Star

  • Manchester United in race to Ederson
  • Reds take advantage of Atletico Madrid’s hesitance
  • Fee expected to be around €45m for midfielder

Manchester United are making big moves to secure its first arrival of the summer window.

All the talk has been about INEOS preferring Premier League experience over anything else to minimise the integration period. However, Serie A may be the first stop for player shopping.

The Red Devils are looking to “close the deal” for a €45m rated Brazilian powerhouse. This summer is all about laying the foundations to replace the departing veteran Casemiro.

Here is how the pursuit of the Bergamo-based destroyer is taking shape over the coming days.

United “Pushing” for Ederson Signing

According to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Manchester United are “pushing to sign” Ederson from Serie A side Atalanta. The priority in the deal is to agree on personal terms with the player. A “contract until 2031” is being readied, as well as a formal approach worth €45m, which is equivalent to around £38.9m. The fee is expected to be sufficient to “close the deal” with the Bergamo side.

Other reports from Alfredo Pedulla via mufcMPB suggest that talks between the two clubs could start as early as next week. United’s biggest contenders for the Brazilian’s signature are Atletico Madrid. The La Liga side is reluctant to meet Atalanta’s asking price, despite having agreed personal terms with the player weeks ago.

United’s aggregated pursuit is a big setback for Diego Simeone’s side, as the Reds have the financial leverage to make their first signing of the summer. Ederson would be expected to be the first of two midfielders coming to Old Trafford in the upcoming transfer window.

Reds Finances Boosted by First Sale

The price for the Brazilian is discounted as he only has one year remaining on his current contract. Whilst the player has no intention to sign a new deal, United need to make the move ahead of Atletico if they are seriously interested in the player. There has been a long-standing interest from United in Ederson since 2024. This summer feels like the perfect time to trigger that interest.

If INEOS are quick to strike a deal here, they must be fairly confident that Manuel Ugarte will depart Old Trafford this summer. It will be a hard ask to recoup all of the €50m spent on the Uruguayan in 2024, but considerable interest in him could secure a few extra millions.

Elsewhere in Italy, Napoli are days away from signing Rasmus Hojlund permanently, which will be worth £38m to the Reds. As United conducts business, they need to sell as well as they buy to balance the books fairly.
