Man Utd will Rue Letting Shea Lacey Leave on Loan

  • Manchester United consider loaning out Shea Lacey
  • Teenager featured in U21 semi final on Friday evening
  • Number of clubs in England and Scotland interested

Manchester United have some key decisions to make for their squad next season.

As the club prepares to compete in four separate competitions in 2026/27, there will be a significant rise in games from this season. Early exits from both the EFL and FA Cup meant that it was the first time the club lost at the first hurdle from domestic cups since 1981-82. Moreover, the 40-game season this term is the fewest they have played since 1914-15.

A bore draw against Sunderland on Saturday (9 May) featured a few rotational players who failed to impress. Despite this, interim boss Michael Carrick insisted that it wasn’t an audition for places next season.

One name in particular, Shea Lacey, did not feature in the matchday squad at the weekend.

‘Queue’ Forming for Shea Lacey

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Manchester United are prepared to let Shea Lacey leave on loan next season. Via his Patreon, Nixon writes that a “queue” is “already forming” for the 19-year-old starlet.

The teenager did not feature in the Premier League due to his participation in PL2’s U21 semi-final against rivals Manchester City on Friday (8 May). Lacey scored from the penalty spot to help the young Reds win a 4-3 thriller to advance to the final.

Furthemore, Nixon writes: “A handful of Championship clubs have asked to take him next season and leading League One sides are trying. A couple of SPFL outfits are also in the mix and Lacey is likely to go where he gets most game time – with official approaches set to be considered soon.”

The concept of sending Lacey out on loan has its benefits. However, continuing his development at Carirngton is a consideration. Currently, he is too advanced for the U21 level. This season, he has dominated youth football with 12 goals and 5 assists in just 18 games.

Lacey has been on the fringes of the first team this season too, making two Premier League cameos against Aston Villa and Burnley. While brief, these appearances left a lasting impression, as his energy and trickery quickly excited the fans.

United will Regret Loan Deal

The teenager has also been an unused substitute on 11 occasions under Carrick and Ruben Amorim. However, his most eventful appearance came during the FA Cup third-round loss to Brighton. A quick succession of yellow cards saw the youngster sent off. It played a part in United not being able to chase the deficit that ultimately dumped them out of the competition under caretaker manager Darren Fletcher.

Consquently, he missed the 2-0 win against City in Carrick’s first game. It was a real shame for him, as it could have propelled him to stay within the first team setup after a tough time with injuries over his time in the academy.

The talent is so clearly there, which should give United enough of a reason to keep him at the club next season. With Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo struggling for form since January, Lacey has a genuine opportunity to play his way into the starting eleven during the upcoming preseason.

Finding the correct club is imperative. If he is just an extra body in a team, his development will be delayed at a crucial time when the Red Devils could instead use him next season. There will be plenty of games to impress, most certainly in the Champions League.

United are not currently looking to reinforce at the right wing. Whilst the club may do so in the future, Lacey must be allowed to impress before then.
