- Manchester United lose record after goallless draw
- Reds were the only team with impressive record
- Team has gone through rollercoaster in 2025/26
Manchester United have had a rollercoaster of a season in 2025/26, divided into two halves of two emotions.
The first half was a ‘struggle’, as Ruben Amorim infamously put it to the media on numerous occasions. The Portuguese was sacked in January after his outburst after the Leeds United game. Darren Fletcher took charge as caretaker manager before Michael Carrick turned the Red Devils into the most in-form Premier League side in 2026.
Through all of the turmoil and the highs, there has never been a day short of ‘boring’ at Old Trafford this campaign.

Red Devils Lose Impressive Record
After the 0-0 draw against Sunderland on Saturday (9 May), Manchester United lost an impressive record that only belonged to them. They were the only side not to have recorded a goalless draw this season.
However, the stalemate at the Stadium of Light put an end to that record in concrete fashion. United only recorded one shot on target all game, which was telling of the attacking quality on display. Matheus Cunha was the only player to test Robin Roefs in goal, and even that shot came in the 93rd minute of the game.
United have scored 27 goals under the 44-year-old in his interim spell. Narrow 1-0 wins against Everton and Chelsea came close to breaking that record earlier, but adding goals to this team has been a big part of the Reds’ shooting up the league table.

Attack Has Seen Improvement but Worries Remain
The confidence of Benjamin Sesko, in particular, has grown under Carrick. Seven goals under the interim boss have helped United in securing points in ‘clutch’ moments. The Sunderland game saw two of Carrick’s best goalscorers missing, as the Slovenian and Casemiro were injured. That also has to be factored in, but the draw did not have a magnanimous effect on United’s standing in third place.
After both Liverpool and Aston Villa drew in their matches, the Reds are almost certain to finish in third. Only a total collapse in goal difference will result in otherwise.
Improving players in the existing squad is a major bonus of Carrick’s management style that INEOS have to weigh up when considering who the permanent manager should be. The end of this record is more of a reflection that goals have been a key feature in the good, the bad and the ugly of this season.
Not one person can argue that Manchester United have not been entertaining in some fashion this season.
