Sunderland 0-0 Man Utd: Carrick Has a Heaven Decision to Make

  • Manchester United interim head coach has a big decision to make
  • Ayden Heaven’s importance to the club
  • Should he have a starting role next season?

Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has a major decision to make ahead of the 2026/27 season. With Carrick seemingly in pole position to take the permanent role ahead of next campaign, he now faces a serious call over centre-back Ayden Heaven.

The 19-year-old English defender has delivered whenever called upon this season, but Carrick has still handed him limited opportunities to establish himself properly in the side.

Prior to the 1-0 win over Chelsea, Heaven had started just 15 minutes of football, coming off the bench in four separate matches.

Across the following three fixtures, including the 1-0 win over Chelsea, Heaven completed all 270 minutes as United secured three of their biggest wins of the season. Then, the moment Lisandro Martinez returned from suspension, Heaven found himself back on the bench.

Heaven’s Future

Carrick and his coaching staff have already played a huge role in shaping Heaven’s future at the club.

Whilst he did not feature in the drab 0-0 draw against Sunderland on 9 May, Heaven had already done enough to keep teammate—and close friend—Leny Yoro out of the side after an assured display against Chelsea.

Granted, Chelsea arrived badly out of form, but Heaven still produced a commanding performance at the back alongside an out-of-position Noussair Mazraoui.

Heaven and Yoro look destined to become United’s long-term defensive partnership, but for now the club clearly wants to manage their minutes carefully.

For Heaven, though, that caution must feel frustrating.

Across the Chelsea, Brentford, and Liverpool fixtures, there is a genuine argument that he was United’s best player in all three matches. His reward? Another afternoon watching from the bench once Martinez returned.

Carrick said prior to the Chelsea fixture:

“In terms of predicting the future, I think you have to be careful what you try and predict, but certainly we’re delighted to have both of them and the ages that they’re at to have played in the Premier League for such a big club, it’s not always the case.”

He added:

“I think it’s a position… to be in the team at a young age in a big club, it’s not always easy, it’s not always straightforward. So, for the two boys to have played that, they have had different amounts [of game time] at different times, but I think the experience and the stage that they’re at now, they’re at a really good stage.

“The future is the future, they need to keep progressing and we’ll give them the opportunity to do that, whether that’s with training off the pitch and the coaching side and the help and the advice, and certainly the game time as well.

Heaven debuted for United in the season prior, shortly after joining from Arsenal’s academy. He’s now made 24 senior appearances ahead of his 20th birthday in September.

Heaven Should Start

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, Carrick or whoever takes the United job must properly assess Heaven’s role in this side. Yes, the youngster still needs careful management, but he also deserves far more than scattered appearances and late cameos.

Whenever United have called upon him, Heaven has looked composed, aggressive, and mature beyond his years. At 19, his ceiling looks frighteningly high.

Dropping him to the bench against Sunderland felt harsh, especially after the level of his recent performances, and when United face Nottingham Forest at the weekend, he should be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The partnership between Heaven and Yoro needs time, rhythm, and continuity if United truly want it to develop into something elite.

The hierarchy reportedly believe the pair could become United’s answer to Arsenal’s William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. Now they need to start treating them like it.
