Man Utd Board Need to Make their Mind up amid Meeting with Iraola

  • Manchester United meet with Andoni Iraola
  • Bournemouth boss still undecided over future
  • Reds must make a decision soon to prepare for next season

Whoever Manchester United appoint as permanent manager for next season will widely decide the players that will be arriving at Old Trafford.

Gone are the days when Erik ten Hag enjoyed autonomy over recruitment. Under INEOS’ new model, the shift to a “head coach” ensures a stricter approach to recruitment.

Yet, it is a pivotal role that requires input for key decisions. For example, Michael Carrick has played a big part in the contract extensions of Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo in the last few weeks.

For the Reds to find their rhythm, INEOS need to be convinced that they have appointed the right man. However, the latest managerial plot twist only makes the indecisiveness stick out like a sore thumb.

Iraola Meets Manchester United Officials

According to The Guardian, Iraola has “met with Manchester United”. However, “the current indications are that they will stick with Michael Carrick”.

The current Bournemouth manager will be leaving the Vitality Stadium at the end of the current season. However, the Cherries are set to qualify for Europe next season as things stand. A total collapse from Aston Villa in the last two games could potentially land Iraola’s side in the Champions League. Realistically, a place in the Europa League beckons.

There have been a number of Premier League clubs interested in the Spaniard, such as Crystal Palace and Chelsea. Talks over a return to his former playing club Athletic Bilbao were recently scuppered.

The report writes that the Blues have also “met Iraola to talk to him about the role”, following the sacking of Liam Rosenior last month. However, their preference could be to opt for former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso.

The Iraola Dilemma

Ultimately, Manchester United finds itself at a crossroads where hesitation can cost the club next season. With the summer window approaching, the board need to let their recruitment strategy be influenced by a permanent head coach they believe in.

Having met Iraola, INEOS are clearly interested in an overachiever familiar with how to manage in English football. The main question mark means whether he is able to manage the expectations at a European giant like the Red Devils.

The elite managerial pool is currently dry. When Real Madrid feels compelled to turn back to Jose Mourinho, it shows how availability is so limited. With Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique effectively off the table, Iraola represents the most progressive alternative away from Carrick. If INEOS don’t want to gamble with Iraola, they must appoint Carrick.

The delay of doing so adds to the nervousness of fans, and threatens United being left behind before they have even joined the race.
