- Man Utd want Steve Holland to stay
- Michael Carrick’s assistant planned six months
- Reds look set to make current coaching staff permanent
Michael Carrick is reportedly expected to be offered Manchester United‘s permanent head coach job, and the club wants Steve Holland to continue as his assistant. Carrick has been assisted by Holland since replacing Ruben Amorim in January.
SullyTalkz reports that not only will Carrick be offered the head-coach role, but Holland will also be presented with a new deal. It could prove to be one of the most important decisions, given how influential the 56-year-old has been.
Holland comes with plenty of experience, having been Gareth Southgate’s assistant during his England reign. He also formed part of Jose Mourinho’s backroom team at Chelsea.
Man Utd Keen on Steve Holland Stay
While all the talk is about Carrick staying on, sealing Holland’s future could prove to be just as crucial. It’s said that he has “impressed internally” and been “pivotal to the results in past months.”
Holland planned to spend six months at Old Trafford but the club want him to stay longer. That likely means he’ll be offered a deal that lasts as long as the one Carrick is handed.
Holland is fulfilling a dream by assisting Carrick at United, given that he grew up a boyhood fan of the club. Much of the defensive improvement since the change in coaching team has been down to Mourinho’s former assistant.
The Reds are likely to wait until the end of the season to announce a new head coach with all indications being that will be Carrick. They may also now be working in the background to secure Holland aswell as other members of the current backroom staff.
How Holland Joined Carrick at Man Utd
Holland wasn’t a member of Carrick’s coaching staff during his time in charge at Middlesbrough. He remained Southgate’s right-hand man, helping guide England to two European Championship finals.
Carrick revealed back in February how the Cheshire-born coach joined him at Old Trafford. He explained the role his brother Graham played:
“When talks were progressing and it looked like I might be coming in, I had conversations with my brother and we ended up mentioning Steve. He knew him from the FA and I have come across Steve a number of times.”
He added:
“I was fully aware of his experience and quality and we clicked straight away. He grew up being a massive United fan, which helped to start with but it was also being successful at Chelsea, knowing what it takes to win trophies with different styles, different managers and different types of players.”
Holland has been around some of the top managers in European football and has proven to be a superb appointment. Carrick is helped by someone with proven experience at the highest level.
