Michael Carrick leaves Man Utd fans on a cliffhanger with Old Trafford speech
  • Michael Carrick addressed Man Utd fans
  • Red Devils beat Nottingham Forest 3-2
  • English coach didn’t confirm his permanent appointment

Michael Carrick didn’t confirm he is the new permanent head coach of Manchester United when addressing fans at Old Trafford. He spoke after the club’s final home game of the season.

United beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 on the day in a thriller that served as the perfect send-off for Casemiro. Bruno Fernandes made history, reaching the all-time Premier League assist record in a single campaign.

Luke Shaw gave the hosts an early lead with a fine finish. But the visitors responded through Morato in the second half.

The Red Devils were back in front just two minutes later when Matheus Cunha calmly slotted home. It came under scrutiny after Bryan Mbeumo appeared to handle the ball.

Fernandes then bagged his 21st assist when he set Mbeumo up for the third. Morgan Gibbs-White netted his side’s second but United held on for all three points.

“A special place” – Carrick reflects on Man Utd season

Carrick reflected on the season and how important the fans have been. He also hailed Casemiro ahead of his departure:

“What a way to finish the season for us. What a game that was, and that’s how we like it. It’s unbelievable to see this place like this, it’s such a special place and does magical things.”

“This is such a good group of players. They’re a really good group of people. They are desperate; the players want to do well. I’ve, of course, got to thank the staff, the effort, the sacrifice, that’s what makes this place so special.

“We have players leaving us. Case has obviously been incredible; we have a really good connection, and it’s nice to see the response you’ve given him.”

Carrick also pointed out Tyrell Malacia’s departure:

“Tyrell aswell who I mentioned to the boys before kick off he’s had a hard time with injuries since he’s been here.

He continued:

“It’s a huge thank you from me for the support this season. The best thing about this place is you lot, the supporters. It’s easy to support and enjoy and when everything’s good. The connection I’ve felt from the moment I stepped foot in this place 20 years ago, through the tougher times it’s when we stick together. You’re a one-off and that’s what this football club is all about.”

“Massive thank you for the season. We’ve had some big moments at this place over the past few months and hopefully there will be more of them.”

Some were expecting Carrick to confirm his appointment as United’s permanent head coach. It appears the club will be doing that itself.
