Manchester United‘s transfer strategy under INEOS of preferring Premier League targets looks set to continue this summer.

Success is quickly taking its shape under INEOS, as the Reds return to Champions League football for the first time since 2023/24, where they exited at the group stages. To help prepare, a new player has emerged on the radar in recent times.

In contrast to this season’s quiet nature, United are planning for an action-packed 50-to-60 game season next term. Therefore, reinforcing the backline is imperative. The next destination on the shopping list could be St James’ Park, where Newcastle United are well aware of the Reds’ interest in their defender.

Newcastle Attempt to Fend Off United Interest

According to a recent report from Chronicle Live, Newcastle United have sent a clear message to Man United regarding the availability of Lewis Hall. Through manager Eddie Howe, the Magpies have chose to handle the speculation by releasing a definitive “years to come” statement regarding the futures of both Tino Livramento and Hall.

Speaking to the Chronicle last week, Howe said: “The reason we signed both players when we did was for an evolution for the team and to see if they would grow into the full-back areas for us. They are two really talented lads who can grow and hopefully be top full-backs for Newcastle for many years, and that is still the case.”

The Tyneside outfit are understandably fretting over the pull of Old Trafford, knowing that the 21-year-old English international has established himself as one of the brightest young full-backs in recent seasons.

The Toons have underperformed this season, currently sitting in 11th position. With one game to go, they can only finish as high as ninth which would require results to go their way. No European football does put them in a vulnerable spot when it comes to departures this summer.

Winger Anthony Gordon is a prime example and is widely expected to leave for German champions Bayern Munich in the transfer window. Newcastle have absolutely no intention of letting Hall leave, which could cool United’s interest for the time being.

United must Reinforce at Left Back

One of the key factors that Newcastle fans will cling to is that Hall is a boyhood fan of their club. Therefore, it may take for Hall to publicly ask for the transfer in order for the move to Old Trafford run smoothly.

United’s recent history of negotiating with Newcastle is rocky. In 2024, United paid £2m to £3m in compensation to Newcastle to sign Dan Ashworth as a sporting director. The Magpies went as far as placing the 55-year-old on gardening leave instead of letting him leave for the Red Devils.

United will be desperate for another left-back to provide legitimate competition for Luke Shaw next season. It feels hard to believe that the Englishman will play the best part of 50 games next season, despite being readily available in 2025/26.

Malacia is set to leave Old Trafford this summer when his contract expires. Patrick Dorgu is increasingly being used further forward as a winger by Michael Carrick. Hall has the modern profile, technical ability, and Premier League experience required – having played for both Chelsea and Newcastle – to succeed at Manchester United.
